What have they been smoking?

PETA has asked the high school in Spearfish, South Dakota, to change its name to "Sea Kitten High School."

Click here for PETA's news release. And here for a little news blurb from Yahoo with a quote from the high school principal.

Now imagine if you will, that the high school does change the name. Can you imagine how tough the sports teams would become? The Sea Kitten Spartans!!! (Yes, that is the mascot. I went to the school website.) They would become the most laughed at school in the entire state of South Dakota!

Let's take it a step further. Imagine if the town changed its name to "Sea Kitten". It would become the toughest town in South Dakota! Sturgis, with all the bikers every August, would be tame in comparison. Someone drives up to "Sea Kitten" to laugh at them because of the name. And they promptly get beaten to a pulp by the town welcoming committee. "Don't laugh!" they'd say. "Or we'll rip your throats out!"

All kidding aside... PETA may have its good points and has a general underlying philosophy that makes sense. Personally, I like a nice steak now and then, and don't believe that they're 100% right all of the time. Pets do need to be treated humanely. I'm happier not knowing exactly what goes on in slaughterhouses and meat packing places. (Please don't send me links or anything. I'll just ignore them and report you for abuse, okay?) But things like this, which are just plain ridiculous and make me laugh so milk comes out my nose, are too much to ignore.

When it gets right down to it, for years people have been saying that plants have feelings, too.(Click here. Yeah, it's Wikipedia.) So... shouldn't there be a PETP also?

Or let's just all join these guys: Click here.

Okay... I was just nosing around PETA's website. There's a link to a page that mentions boycotting Iams pet foods because of the cruelty to animals reported within the company. There's a link there encouraging people to not buy from companies that test on animals. Um, excuse me, if a pet food company shouldn't test their products on animals, what should they test them on? People? I suggest that the PETA people that come up with these ideas either think about the issue or volunteer to test the products themselves!

I think I need to get away from the PETA website now before I start laughing so hard that people think I have lost my marbles completely.
